During the match between India and Australia, the Indian openers started off really well. Before they reached a 100 run partnership, Dhawan took a hit from this rising bouncer from Pat Cummins on his thumb which stopped the match for a few minutes. Dhawan continued to play and scored yet another overseas century for India which paved the way to India’s victory against their strongest rivals in this tournament. However, Dhawan was not out on the field in the second innings because of his injury. He was later spotted in the dressing room with an ice bag on his hand.
The left-handed opener has been India’s key player against any opponent outside the sub-continent. While Rohit Sharma has been a big innings player, Dhawan keeps the run rate up and gives a strong base to the team. In his absence, India might struggle in having versatility among batsmen. The primary reason behind this is lack of left-handers in the Indian side. Jadeja, who is an all-rounder, cannot be relied on for batting more than a few overs. The previous world cup squad had Raina and Yuvraj who were not only amazing left-handers but also great fielders. Even though Indians are known for their accuracy on the field, they still lack quality left-handed batsmen which are why the exclusion of Rishabh Pant was criticized by experts.

Dhawan and team India’s official physio Patrick Farhat updated captain Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri and other authorities about Dhawan’s injury. It was reported that the area between index finger and thumb is significantly injured and he was under scanning and observation in the hospital. Later in a press conference, Kohli updated that Dhawan will be missing the next game against New Zealand in Nottingham which will be followed by one of the most anticipated matches on 16th, the Indo-Pak clash. With stakes set high India is surely bothered after losing their only left-hander from the side.
Kohli also added that the present form of entire batting order looks fir and in form. Though we will miss Dhawan on the ground, others will surely look to compensate for the loss. In the lower order, Kohli and Dhoni look responsible and with Hardik Pandya continuing his form from IPL India still remains at the peak of their batting ability. An obvious move would be to promote the number 4 batsman KL Rahul to open along with Rohit Sharma. Which means India will be playing a different number 4 batsman. Jadhav, Dhoni, Hardik, Karthik all these are the possible replacements. But only time will tell if India will call for a permanent replacement for this tournament and move on from Dhawan for the time. It is obvious that with the amount of experience and ability to play overseas that Dhawan has, it will be difficult to strengthen the opening but only time will tell if this loss will affect team India and their chances of winning the world cup.
