The 2019 world cup has already become a batsman’s tournament which has weakened the other half of almost every team. Yes, bowlers have constantly struggled to put batting line-ups down. Almost every match is resulting in 300+ scores. In fact, any figure short of 320 or so is an unsafe total. In the beginning, when world cup squads were announced, a few teams were confident about their batting while a few others were certain about their bowling attacks. Sadly conditions have been unfavorable for bowlers.
After a tremendous effort in the first innings, Pakistan was able to restrict Australia on 307 which is a better figure for current standards. Amir was the only bowler who could maintain an economy rate well below 6. With his 5 wicket haul, Amir eclipsed the flaws in the Pakistani bowling attack. The young pacer liked to believe that the teams’ defeat was because of under-skilled bowlers. Other bowlers were only looking to pitch short of length which shouldn’t be the mindset against a strong team like Australia, Amir added. The wicket was better than previous ones. There was movement in the ball and bowling a better length would definitely help bowlers.
The weather conditions were actually advantageous for bowlers this time. Pre-showers grew a tiny bit of grass on pitches which helps fast bowlers. It was obvious that the toss-winning captain will look to bowl first. Umpires were precautious and started the game early to ensure that match is not abandoned. Heavy clouds covered the ground which was even better for pacers.
Things looked up and Pakistan won the toss. Putting Australia to bat first initially turned completely against Sarfaraz Ahmed. Warner and Finch scored a 146 runs partnership and Warner went on to score 107. Other than them no batsman scored well but the tiny contributions helped Australia to boost their score. Thanks to the fast bowlers who consistently bowled in the wrong areas. While Amir ended on 5/30 in his 10 overs quota, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi were completely lost and gave away too many runs. The experienced spinner, Hafeez was the weakest among bowlers and gave 60 runs in just 7 overs. After bowling a good first spell Wahab Riaz was thrashed all over the part in middle overs. Because of this, he couldn’t even bowl 10 overs as Sarfaraz turned to Malik for few overs. Amir believed that they could have restricted the Kangaroos anywhere around 250 if bowlers didn’t lose their rhythm.
Apart from this Pakistan’s fielding was no different. They dropped catches which also includes an early opportunity of Finch who then scored 82 and helped Australia to cross the 300 marks. This was an important match for Pakistan and they lost 2 more points. The team wants to move on and get ready for the Indo-Pak clash.
